Description
Alaskan MKIV Chainsaw Mill
The ALASKAN MARK IV portable chain saw mill allows you to efficiently mill trees on site and produce dimensional lumber suitable for timber framing, standard building or woodworking projects…handy for wood workers, arborists, homeowners, log home builders, timber framers…
These are a drop ship item from the factory…expect 2-3 weeks.
The Alaska Mark IV chain saw mill is available in several sizes…(it’s the ‘Handle and Rail’ sets that are different)…e.g. 24″, 30″, 36″…the rest of the unit is the same. This allows you to have one mill with several ‘Handle and Rail’ sets (You don’t want a 48″ set installed if you’re cutting a 12″ beam…too awkward).
To better understand what the 24″, 30″ etc. actually means…if you’re using the 24″, then the maximum length of the bar you can use is 24″. From that you need to deduct 4-6″ for the tip of the bar (which usually has a sprocket tip)…that part sticks out past the ‘cut’…thus a 24″ kit will allow you to cut up to a 18-22″ wide log.
You can use a shorter bar…say a 20″ bar…again, deduct 4-6″, thus the maximum cut width would be 14-16″…in effect, you can shorter the width of the handle and rail setup to what works best for you.
Note: You need to use ripping chain to achieve an efficient cut. Either Granberg’s ripping chain, or one you customize yourself.
Note: The minimum size saw for smaller cuts would be a 50cc (about 3 cu.in. we recall)…thus the 24″ (18″ max cut) would take a MINIMUM of a 50 cc saw…60 cc for a 36″ mill or as large as you can get your hands on…(check the local pawn shops…old big saws aren’t in high demand)
