Froes are used to split timbers, wooden shingles and shakes, kindling, and planks for steam bending as the ‘split’ will follow the grain, unlike the result you’d get using a bandsaw mill or chainsaw.
Froes are hit with a wooden Mallet, we find they work best is smooth grain woods, such as Red Cedar. Harder woods depend a bit on the moisture content, diameter of the wood and the straightness of the grain and lack of any knots.
Many folks use a froe to make kindling as it keeps your hands out of the way (unlike using a hatchet), although we’ve generally used ours for shake and shingle making.
