Backer-rod, Gasketing, Oakum

Backing materials, such as closed and open cell foam ropes, sometimes called filler rope and closed cell trapazoid shaped ‘grip strip’, are used to provide a backing for caulking and chinking products.

Oakum can be used in the same manner, however it’s generally used on it’s own in traditional log building and wooden boat restorations.

Gasketing is most often used between layers of logs in a log wall to seal any gaps created during construction.
