Framing Chisels and Corner Chisels

Definition: A tool with a cutting edge on one end of a metal blade, used
in dressing, shaping, or working in timber, stone, metal,
etc.; -- usually driven by a mallet or hammer.

Made at a forge started 100 years ago and done in the traditional manner with no power assisted equipment.
Hand forged lamination of "white" steel and wrought iron then tempered to Rc65.
Handles Japanese Red Oak, double hooped

Blade length approximately 5", overall length 16". You can plane across a flat surface approximately 10" before the handle gets in the way and starts to lift the blade off the work.

Robert Sorby from England. 
Designed for North American cabin building.  

Useful for large framing work when working on very deep mortises, where strength of blade is required. Fitted with Ash handle  Handles are double hooped.

All Robert Sorby tools are hardness tested. This  ensures that no soft or brittle tools leave the factory. The hardness differs at various points along the tool. For example, it would be wrong to have the area around the tang at the same hardness as the tip. Its role is completely different. If it were too brittle it would snap under pressure.

Used to cut cut and trim the corners of a mortise to a precise 90 degree angle and any other situation where accurate square corners are required.
We carry a top quality English version from Sheffield England, and a fantastic Japanese version of this popular tool.  

This looks a lot like the Sorby corner chisel (also made of Sheffield Steel), however with no name stamped on the tool.

These stout gouges are designed for log work and will cut for many working hours between sharpening. Strength and balance make this gouge a favorite among log smiths.

These gouges have a narrow sweep, (called: "transverse curvature of the blade").
Narrow gouges are generally used to finish and detail cuts and for work on small carvings.
Great for cleaning edge of lateral or notch.
Socket style for good durability.

Froe

Traditional tool for splitting straight-grained wood such as riving (splitting) a long rail (for a split rail fence), or riving willow, small alder or ? into long strips to weave into rustic furniture, gates, fences.
To use you knock the froe "blade" into the end of a small pole and then push, tap, wiggle the froe as you're driving/moving it down the length of the pole.
Most commonly used  to hand split shakes and shingles. 

This is a heavy duty unit. Not to be confused with the lighter/smaller units more commonly available. The "eye" appears to be a single piece and is thicker than either of the other froes we carry.

Blade length 11-3/4", width varies from 2-3/8" near the eye to 2-1/8" near the tip.

This froe is made to exacting standards in Germany. The entire length of the blade is carefully heat treated to provide an edge that will retain it's sharpness in extended use. 
Slightly lighter duty than the Gransfors Bruks. However, very nice for the price.
The "eye" appears to be a single piece however the blade is painted green and we've not sanded enough paint off to take a really good look.

This is technically called a shingle froe, though it's not much smaller than the Ox-head listed above. The "eye" on this one is a a split eye where the seam is welded at the blade. The eye has a hole drilled in the side and comes with a wood screw so you can secure the handle to the head (blade), if you want.

These Carver's mallets have a urethane head and are guaranteed not to crack or split. The anti-shock quality of the head imparts greater force to your tool.

These fine mallets are made by a family that has specialized in mallets and agricultural implements for over two centuries. 
Heads are fashioned from dense, heavy Japanese hardwoods noted for an ability to withstand impacts. The handles are Japanese White Oak for strength and longevity. 
The hand mallets can be used for hammering on chisels, driving wooden pegs and adjusting joinery. 

Use this tool to move your logs or timbers to their exact position. 
Minimizes risk of cosmetic damage to the log or timber due to the larger face of this mallet. 
Head is metal strapped to prevent splitting.
