Simpson Capstan Winch Specifications and FAQ's

How long can I expect to run the SP winch on a tank of gas?

20 minutes

How do I hold the trigger on the chainsaw when using the CS winch when I'm pulling on the rope at the same time?

Set the throttle at the "start" position...this is the normal throttle position when you choke the motor to start it. When it starts, push in the choke...however, don't release the throttle. Alternately, use some sort of fastener to hold the throttle partially on...it doesn't need to be full throttle.

What happens if I try pulling more than the maximum rated load?

The motor will stall.

What type and size of rope can I use with the Simpson Winch?

Polyester is the most popular rope to use. We carry the 3/8" diameter twisted and the 5/16" double braided. 3/8" is the maximum diameter of rope for this winch.

What types of rope can't I use?

You can't use polypropelene, polyurethane, nylon.

Can I use old climbing rope with the winch?

Wrong kind of rope. Too much burnable/meltable stuff in the rope...that doesn't do well with the capstan friction.

How about using electricians "Mule Tape" instead of rope?

Doesn't work. Capstan isn't wide enough for the way the mule tape "spreads" out.

Can I convert the CS winch to a SP winch?

Yes, the conversion package is currently $275.00...we'll direct you to how to return the CS winch to the mfg...normally takes them less than a week to complete the conversion. Shipping to return the package varies with your location.

I've heard about using the Simpson Winch for pulling "crab pots". What's different about these winches?

Crab Pot winches have a different gearing ratio that has twice the line speed with 1/2 the rated pull (as crab pots don't weigh that much). This puts the line speed at a good rate for efficiently pulling pots...these are difficult to get and sometimes take months of lead time.
