The basics of log furniture, rustic furniture, twig furniture and log railing building are remarkably similar. As shown in Dan Macks' "Rustic Furniture Workshop", you start by making a log ladder which gives you the skill to make a log, rustic or twig chair, log railings, log furniture, log bookcase and so on.

On this page you'll find all the log and rustic furniture building tools from drill powered tenon cutters to router driven tenon cutters (makers), to Milwaukee super hole shooter drills and Milwaukee self feed bits

If you're new to this endeavor we suggest you start by reading the article: Creating Your Own Log Railings and Furniture by Tracy Johnston.

Then take a look at the many Log and Rustic Furniture Making Books for how-to, project plans, and design ideas.

Additionally, the use of a moisture meter will insure that tight fits remain tight.

Tenon Cutters

Tenon Cutters are now available in a Router powered style as well as the well known Drill powered style.

In the power tenon cutters that are drill powered, we currently offer three brands of professional quality tenon cutters.

All brands will work in our Drill Carriage and Clamping device to allow you high volume capabilities in your log and rustic furniture building. Here's a link to more info on tenon cutters.

Tenon Cutters - Router driven

The "shoulder" on this style of cutter is the radius of the router bit being used...similar in look to the Lumberjack radius cutter. This is different that the 60 degree shoulder style shown for most of the drill powered tenon cutters.

LogMan Original     LogMan2

Logman Tenon Maker- "Original"

If you are looking for a fast and affordable way to put a tenon on a log, then this is it.
Wood guides direct the end of the wood toward the router blade. The router bit shapes the wood ends to the shape and diameter of the hole in the Wood Guide. You hand turn & slowly push the wood through the hole in the Wood Guide. The end result is a tenon of any length with a radius shoulder. The tenon has a slight spiraling groove, which makes it more glue-able. The groove is adjustable by raising or lowering the router depth.

Log diameters can be up to 1-3/4" larger than the hole diameter. (a 2" hole can take a 3-3/4" diameter pole).
When first starting out with the Tenon Maker, we found that it works best when the diameter of the wood is within 1" the size of the tenon. Large diameter wood takes awhile to learn how to get it "started".

The router bit is called a core box bit or a round nose router bit. It has a 1 1/2" cutting diameter, a 3/4 radius, 1" cutting length & a 1/2" shank. The router bit is included in the base price.
Any router that has a 1/2" collet, (1/2" shaft) will work fine with the Logman Tenon Maker.

Logman Tenon Maker- 2
ST0098LM-2

This is the updated version of the Original LogMan Tenon Maker (see above).

All you need is a 2 or more horse power router with a 1/2" collet.
Attach your router to the top of a Logman tenon maker (top is already predrilled to accept most routers), and you are ready to start making tenons.

The Logman 2 has:

  • New larger router bit (compared to the LogMan Original), that will allow you to feed bigger diameter logs into it. The new router bit is a real time saver! The bit cuts a radius shoulder tenon that was designed especially for log furniture & handrailing builders.
NOTE: The Logman 2 router bit only works with the logman 2 tenon maker.
  • New polished aluminum u-bracket that is predrilled on top to fit most routers
  • Sliding stop-used if making lots of tenons the same length.
  • 2 metal slides that hold the wood guides in place
  • Safety strap
  • Hardware
  • Easy to follow instructions.

Tenon Cutters - Drill powered

These Tenon Cutters can be mounted on  either 1/2" (all brands), or 3/4" drills (NW & Barker).
All sizes work best with a 3/4" drill. For any sort of production rustic furniture building we recommend using the Milwaukee Super Hole Shooter Drill with the Drill Carriage and Clamping Device. The Drill Carriage is preset to accept the Milwaukee Super Hole Shooter Drill "out of the box". Smaller tenon sizes can employ a high quality 1/2" drive drill in a low volume production setting.

The size of your wood stock will determine the cutter head needed. (As well as the diameter of the tenon required). Tenon lengths can be adjusted, (by moving the shaft in or out), and widths slight adjusted by judicious movement of the blades (to accomodate variations in wood being drilled and the actual width of the drill bit being used).
High carbon steel blades in both the single blade style, (available only in the some Barker models), and the double blade style are re-sharpenable many times and should last for several hundred cuts between sharpenings in good clean wood.

Lumberjack

Lumberjack tenon cutters are available in either a radius (curved), shoulder and the more standard 60 degree shoulder (such as on the NW & Barker tenon cutters.

  • Lumberjack tenon cutters have a "fixed" steel 1/2" diameter shaft.
  • In-sight design allows you to visually see the length of the tenon being cut
  • Blades are re-sharpenable and an optional sharpening kit is available. (different kit needed for Radius and 60 degree).
  • 60 degree cutters can accept a larger diameter pole.

Barker Tenon Cutters
st0100-barker
  • Heavy duty design. Made of machined high-grade aluminum in either single or double blade styles.
  • Barker tenon cutters can be used with either a 1/2" or a 3/4", drill. (Order the appropriate Shaft diameter)
*We recommend the 3/4" drill for the double blade tenon cutters - they cut faster and require the additional power of the 3/4" drill. The 3/4" drill also works well for all single blade cutters.
*A heavy duty 1/2" drill should only be used with the single blade tenon cutters, or the smallest size tenon cutters. They require less power to run and take about 4 seconds longer to cut the same tenon.
  • A Note on single and double blade tenon cutter differences:
Single blade cutters take approximately 5 seconds longer to cut a tenon than double blade cutters. Thus, single blade cutters are easier on the drill and create less torque to the material being tenoned, which means it's easier to secure the material. For the 2 newest and largest sizes, we offer these only on a 3/4" shaft but with a single blade--this combination will be easier on your drill.
Double blade tenon cutters cut faster, which could be a factor in a shop with several people vying for use of the drill and cutter.
Smaller 3/4" and 1" tenon cutters are only available with double cutter blades. 1-1/2" size through the 2-9/16" size cutters are available in either single or double cutter blades. The largest sizes are only available in 3/4" shaft, single blade style.
  • All aluminum Barker cutters have built in levels.

Drill Carriage/Holders and Clamping/Holding Devices

Barker Carriage and Clamp       NW Carriage and Clamp

Drill Carriage is actually two components (in the case of the Barker and NW drill carriages). One is the slide that is bolted to your work bench. The other is the holder for the drill. The drill holder and drill then glide along the carriage slide toward the log material that is secured in the clamping device.

The Manual Clamping Device is designed to easily center material to line up with the drill chuck. Clamps on each side of the round stock move toward the centering point simultaneously which keeps your log stock centered on the tenon cutter head.
Although you can clamp your material in a wood vice and "free hand" the drill into the material to create the tenon, furniture makers have reported a return on investment in under 30 days using the Carriage and Clamping device when compared to using the Tenon Cutters without Carriage and Clamp. If you have more than a single project or two, you'll find the clamp and carriage systems nearly indispensable.

        LumberJack Log & Tenon Mates

The LumberJack system is different than the 2 products discussed above. First the drill holder is a 1 piece unit that both clamps to the drill, and slides inside the square tubing frame of the Clamping component.

The Clamp (Log Mate) is set up to allow it to be used to secure material for drilling and peeling as well as the standard tenon making.

LogMan Wedge

Used to easily secure material for peeling. Not used for tenon making.

LogMan WedgeLogman-wedge2.jpg (21440 bytes)
ST0026-wedge

Now, it doesn't get much easier than this. Simply bolt or screw the "Wedge", to a handy wall, and you're ready to go. No loosening straps, or unclamping your work anymore...simply lift, twist, and release and the weight of the material holds your work securely.Logman-wedge3.jpg (11539 bytes)

Setup for material up to 4-1/2".

$39.99

LumberJack Log & Tenon Mate System

The Log Mate secures log in a horizontal position with a vice-like grip. Made of powdercoated tubular steel for years of service. Quick ratcheting strap handles up to 6" diameter logs. It's possible to use this to secure material for peeling, drilling, and in conjunction with the Tenon Mate, cutting tenons.

The Tenon Mate slides into rails of the Log Mate. Holds drill and tenon cutter in a fixed position for consistent cutting, increased safety and productivity. Drill and Log Mate are sold separately. (What is shown is both the Log Mate and Tenon Mate on the right).

Attach legs to the Log Mate and you won't need a table. Can be bolted to floor with built-in brackets. Log Mate and drill sold separately. (Shown without legs in photo on the right)

st0104-barker-package.jpg (9042 bytes)Similar to the NW system (shown below),  except yellow in color and the "glide" system is slightly different (not better or worse as far as we can determine, just different).
Stoutly built system that should give years of good service, even in a production shop.

Drill Carriage-Barker
st0102-carriage-barker

Drill carriage can be ordered to hold either of the following:
3/4" drive Milwaukee Super Hole Shooter Model #1854-1 or the:
1/2" Milwaukee Drill Model #1663-20
(The Milwaukee #1660-1 is a single speed version of the #1663.20...It can be made to work. You'll need to bend the metal clamp on the carriage so the "trigger" on the drill is accessable).

For any sort of production work we recommend the 3/4" drive drill for its durability.

Please choose 1/2" or 3/4" carriage when ordering.

This is a two part unit. The "clamping system" for the drill and the "slide" that the drill moves along toward the log material.

Milwaukee Super Hole Shooter Drill

Model 1854-1
This drill fits the above drill carriage clamp. Even professional furniture and railing makers will work week after week without wearing this one out.

3/4" drive, 10 amp, 120v ac/dc 350 rpm reversing. Triple gear train, helical cut heat treated gears, chrome moly alloy steel, pre-lubricated ball bearings, extra long switch handle and pipe handle, glass filled nylon spade and switch handles, Jacobs taper spindle.

Note: This is not a drill that you pick up and hold while drilling without bracing yourself and the drill properly. Do yourself a favor and listen to what we're saying here. Use this drill in the Drill Carriage, listed above, brace the drill in a manner that it "won't get away from you", or figure on "free-handing", and your day will come.
