However the final "look" may vary between the products.
When testing samples, apply in a manner consistent with the
directions
for the product you intend to use. (e.g. 1 coat for SRD, multiple coats
for Cetol 1 and 23+ system).
When reordering product please verify the product name is
exactly

Sikkens
Sikkens
is a high-solids,
film-forming finish,
that reduces the environmentally damaging emission of solvent
substances found in many other oil (alkyd) finishes.
Cetol is
the brand name of Sikkens products that fall into either the
Translucent or Clear categories. When you see a product with Cetol
on the label, this product will allow you to see all
the wood grain and character of the wood (although depending on the
product, it may color the wood).
New Cetol products,
formulated
with proprietary high solids technology, were specially developed to
maximize the beauty and longevity of log homes, decks and exterior wood
doors and windows. This next generation or "Next Wave"
of high solids advancement offers consumers and contractors the beauty
and durability they expect from Sikkens with a more simple and quick
application. The new-to-North America formulations will provide a range
of benefits including beautiful appearance, excellent durability,
superior penetration and adhesion, ease of use and clean-up.
Sikkens is compatible with most quality chinking
products and polyurethane or acrylic caulking. (Allow the
finish to dry properly prior to applying chinking or caulking).
Note:
Logs or wood need a moisture content below 18% for the finish/sealer to
work
properly.
We have available "free" booklets titled,
"Sikkens Log Home Application Guide" and "Sikkens Exterior and Interior
Protection for Log Structures". (the latter includes a color chart of
Cetol 1 colors).

Cetol
Log & Siding
Cetol
Log & Siding is a translucent, satin finish for vertical
surfaces.
This alkyd high solids formulation (using European alkyd emulsion
technology), offers optimum protection and a premium look using only
two coats. The two-coat finish creates a protective film, giving the
siding a premium look while preserving the natural character and grain
of the wood. It is available in a variety of translucent colors.
Several properties of their popular Cetol 1 and Cetol 23+ have been
combined and improved upon, allowing Cetol Log & Siding to
perform as well or better...and with only 2 coats. (this equates to a
big time and labor savings over the traditional 3 coat process of Cetol
1, 23+).
Conforms
to the new 2005 VOC emission standards recently implemented in several
states. You're safe to use this product in all 50 states. (with the
exception of LA, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino counties in S.
California).
- Coverage:
Smooth wood 350-450 sq. ft./gallon (8.5 11 sq. m./L)
Rough wood Approximately half the coverage of smooth wood
- Number of
Coats: 2
- Application:
Use long haired natural bristle brush . Apply first coat to saturation
and brush product into surface working out all drips, puddles, or areas
of over spray before dry.
Wait a minimum of 24 hours prior to applying 2nd coat.
- Maintenance:
Proper maintenance starts with visual inspection. A timeframe of 2 to 3
years on the south and west exposures and 3 to 4 years on the north and
east exposures can be used as a general guideline. However, as
weathering, exposure conditions, and applications can vary widely,
maintenance may be needed sooner and should be performed when visually
necessary, regardless of timeframe. Sikkens Clear Maintenance coat
can be used over Log & Siding
- Compatible
over existing Cetol 1 and Cetol 23+.

Cetol - 1
Cetol 1
separates wood from the elements with a durable surface barrier which
repels water, while allowing excess moisture to escape thus inhibiting
fungal growth. Because the finish "breathes", it allows the logs to
regulate moisture content. (see notes above on recommended moisture
content). Generally used before Cetol-23 Plus, Cetol 1 penetrates into
wood, seals it, and provides a perfect base.
Maintenance:
On
homes, a maintenance coat using Cetol 23+ should be applied
approximately every 4-5 years on most walls and 3 years on your
"weather" side. We've had people tell us "I haven't done
anything in over 8 years and it still looks great" but please, don't
wait that long! You want your finish to stay in
great shape--not wait until it degrades which gives you MUCH more work
to do. Before applying the maintenance coat, follow the
maintenance preparation procedures discussed in the application guide
which you'll get with your purchase.
For fences and outdoor
furniture, recoat with Cetol 1 as visually necessary--usually every 1-2
years.
Usage: Siding, trim, doors, garage doors,
windows, logs, outdoor furniture, fences
Features: Superior UV protection, highly
transparent, water repellent, weather resistant, flexible, breathable.
Application: Long-haired, natural bristle
brush or spray. Strongly recommended that you brush on the first
coat. Touch dry after 4-6 hours and recoatable after 24 hours
depending on weather conditions, usually 20 C (68 F) and 65% relative
humidity. At temperatures below 10 C (50 F) or conditions of high
humidity, the drying will be slowed.
Coverage:
Cetol 1 (for rough or old Wood) 200-300 sq. ft./US gallon
Cetol 1 (for smooth or new wood) 250-350 sq. ft./US gallon
Note:
For
outdoor furniture and fences use 3 coats of Cetol 1 without a top coat
of Cetol 23+.
NOTE:
Restriction List: Due to tightening VOC
restrictions in many areas, we can't ship "regular" Cetol 1 in

Sikkens Cetol - 23 Plus
Cetol 23 Plus offers a greater degree of protection from the
harmful
effects of ultraviolet light in areas of high elevation or intense
sunlight. The secret is an unprecedented use of two UV-absorbing
materials, widely dispersed and permanently fixed into the surface
film. Cetol 23 Plus retains its elasticity and remains firmly attached
to the wood. Used after Cetol-1 to seal your wood from moisture.
Contains a special UV inhibitor for even more UV protection.
Note:
This is the topcoat for Cetol 1.
Maintenance:
See
Cetol 1 (above) for maintenance recommendation.
Usage: Siding, trim, doors, garage doors,
windows, logs
Features: Superior UV protection, highly
transparent, water repellent, weather resistant, flexible, breathable.
Application: Long-haired, natural bristle
brush or spray. Touch dry after 4-6 hours and recoatable after 24 hours
depending on weather conditions, usually 20 C (68 F) and 65% relative

humidity, the drying will be slowed.

Cetol SRD
SRD
is an easy to use, translucent water repellent exterior wood finish for
log siding, roofs, and decks. This one coat system incorporates finely
ground transparent iron oxide pigments that result in a rich, natural
and uniform coloration of the wood surface, while offering protection
from moisture and UV damage. As Cetol SRD is easy to use, it's the
ideal choice for demanding areas where more frequent maintenance may be
necessary. One-coat application, water repellent, UV protection. Cetol
SRD is for application to areas normally troublesome to coat with
film-forming products. Non film building.
Has fungicide to help prevent mold growth.
Note: If the surface does not have an even
appearance (around knot areas, etc.), a second thin coat may be applied
to even out the color.
- Maintenance:
A
maintenance coat using Cetol SRD should be applied when visually
necessary to help maintain its protective characteristics. Before
applying the maintenance coat, follow the maintenance preparation
procedures.
- Usage:
Siding, trim, outdoor furniture,
fences, log homes and log siding, roof shakes and shingles, decks,
docks, composite wood.
-
Features: One coat gives a matt, non-film
forming, translucent wood finish...all blends.
(California "250" blend can also be applied as 3 coats on
vertical surfaces to get a satin sheen...24 hours between coats).
-
Application: Garden pump sprayer, long-haired
natural bristle brush, airless sprayer or roller. All methods must be
back brushed using a good quality long hair natural brush. In the case
of shakes & shingles, dipping is recommended, then brushing any
excess drops until smooth.
-
Coverage:
- (for
rough or old Wood) 100-150 sq. ft./US gallon
- (for
smooth or new Wood) 200-300 sq. ft./US gallon
Additional
information on SHAKE & SHINGLE APPLICATION
High levels of humidity and moisture exist in roof shakes and shingles
due to the
many end grains and horizontal surfaces involved. All end grains must
be heavily
coated to avoid moisture uptake into the wood.
Cetol SRD may be sprayed on in the case of roof shingles and shakes.
Apply
enough material to get an even appearance of the coating. Brush out any
runs
immediately to avoid lapmarks and drips. For best results, shakes and
shingles
should be individually dipped. To do so, immerse them in Cetol SRD, let
the excess
drip off or brush out, then lay out to dry for a minimum of 16 hours.
Once dry,
shakes/shingles can be installed.

Door & Window
For
use on exterior doors, garage doors, and windows.
Incredibly durable finish that brings out the natural beauty of your
wood.
Doors
& Windows
Entrance and garage doors as well as windows have a unique problem in
that they
have many joints and seams; therefore, a lot of open-end grains. If not
properly
treated, this could cause coating failure due to excess moisture
intake. Additionally,
the temperature difference that exists between the interior and
exterior can cause
moisture transport, which may lead to problems. To reduce or eliminate
the possibility
of coating failure in these situations, some simple procedures should be
adhered to. Doors should be coated on all sides including the top and
bottom.
Windows should be coated well on the interior surface as well as the
exterior.
If possible, coat the outside frame structure of the window. Garage
doors should
be coated on the bottom and top of the door, replacing hardware only
after the
coating is dry. Where there are holes or areas where the joinery meets,
saturate
heavily with the coating and, where necessary, fill with a good quality
polyurethane
or acrylic-based caulking.
Note: Do not use Door & Window
Clear
by itself on any heavily exposed areas
(south and west). A base coat of Cetol 1, or a base coat of Door and
Window color (available only in quarts), is necessary for proper UV
protection.
Maintenance: A
maintenance coat of Door and Window Clear every two (2) to three (3)
years on the south & west-facing sides or heavily exposed
areas. Reapply every three (3) to four (4) years on the north &
east sides. Before applying the maintenance coat, follow the
maintenance preparation procedures.
Usage: Exterior doors, including garage
doors,
window frames
Features: Water-clear finish, quick drying,
washable, non-yellowing
Application: Verify moisture content below
18%. Use good quality longhaired, natural bristle brush. Can recoat
after 24 hours. Sand with 220-320 grit sandpaper between coats.
Coverage: 350-450 sq. ft./US gallon (smooth
