Wooden Pegs

These pegs are made of air-dried oak (red and white), or ash. 
Used by Timber Framers for joining the pieces of their frames together, by log builders in building traditional log trusses and to hold one log to another in a stack, and in kit log construction they are sometimes used at the point where two logs are spliced together to form a longer run. 
Wooden pegs should be stored in a cool dry place as they can shrink or swell depending upon the humidity in your area. 
Also, drill bits can vary in size. Therefore, some timber framers have an assortment of bits. They drill test holes before using the pegs so they can match the bit to the pegs on hand. 
If you're working with hard woods, such as White Oak or occasionally Douglas Fir, many builders prefer to use a tapered peg.
Pegs are coated with wax (e.g. put into a large tumbler with several blocks of wax and slow tumbled until they're totally coated with a light coating of wax. It will look slightly shiny).

Available profiles:

• Straight (which has a slight chamfer on one end...turned approximately 1/64" oversize)
• Tapered, (1/64� over diameter at one end to 1/64� under at the other end. The 1/64 oversize is   consistent for approximately 1" then it starts to taper)
• Double Chamfered (looks like the straight peg except it has the chamfer on both ends

Note: 
White Oak pegs generally have a brownish/white color, Red Oak more of a reddish tone, Ash is the whitest of the batch.
