Dry Oakum is quite different from the oiled...here there is only a light 'wetting' of oil to keep the dust down. Perhaps not enough to discourage bugs...however pressure applied to the oakum through the weight of the logs  most likely won't force the minimal oil out of the product.

As always, when in doubt...run a test

1 lb. is approximately 6 strands 1" x 27" long

5 lb.box...This is 28 "ropes" running approximately 1' x 27"

50 lb. box is approximately 100' of 2-1/4 inch diameter oakum, which is made up of  8 strands of 3/4" diameter with a twist every 18" or so...
Each of the 8 strands can be untwisted into 4 1/4" strands...thus if you untwist it all the way you'll have approximately 3200 lf. of 1/4" diameter dry Oakum...whew!

NOTE: Oakum is rarely visible when installed. However, for those working on unusual projects, some folks feel there is a bit of a deep dark green tint to the stuff...personally, I think this is whatever floor sweepings got put in the mix [sic].
